State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R–Harrison Township) has welcomed the inclusion of $800,000 in the House-approved budget to address the spread of Microseira wollei, or “muck,” in Lake St. Clair.
The proposed funding is intended to support a collaboration between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Macomb County Public Works Office on a three-year field trial aimed at removing and managing this type of benthic algae. The algae forms dense mats along the lakebed, which can disrupt fish habitats, block boating access, and threaten one of Michigan’s significant natural resources.
“Lake St. Clair is one of Michigan’s most valuable natural assets, and the muck problem is a direct threat to our environment, recreation, and economy,” said St. Germaine. “This funding is a critical first step toward protecting the lake for families, boaters, and businesses across our state.”
The expansion of this algae has economic impacts as well. With over 50 marinas and thousands of boat slips in Michigan, local tourism, small businesses, and property values are tied closely to healthy lakeshores. Boaters have reported issues at launch sites due to accumulating muck; continued growth could further limit recreational use and negatively affect area economies.
“I’m proud this project is included in the House budget, but our work isn’t done,” said St. Germaine. “As negotiations continue with the Senate and governor, I’ll keep fighting to ensure this investment remains in the final budget so we can deliver real solutions for our community and for Michigan.”
