State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township) spoke before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity to support a proposed $800,000 grant aimed at addressing the invasion of Microseira wollei, commonly referred to as “muck,” in Lake St. Clair.
The grant would fund a collaboration between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Macomb County Public Works Office for a three-year field trial. The goal is to remove and manage the benthic algae, which forms dense mats along the lakebed and threatens Michigan’s ecology, economy, and recreational opportunities.
“Lake St. Clair is one of Michigan’s crown jewels,” said St. Germaine. “This investment would support targeted removal, treatment, and long-term study of an invasive benthic algae that’s damaging fish habitat, obstructing boating access, and jeopardizing the health of a lake enjoyed by out of state tourists and communities across the state. The muck also poses a safety threat. If someone falls in it, it acts like quicksand, and you would be a goner.”
The algae’s growth has led to economic challenges for local communities around Lake St. Clair. Macomb County hosts more than 50 marinas and thousands of boat slips; these are key components of its tourism sector and property values. Boaters have reported difficulties at launch sites due to algae buildup, raising concerns about ongoing recreational access and potential negative effects on small businesses.
“This issue affects all of Michigan,” said St. Germaine. “Lake St. Clair is enjoyed by the state and an asset shared by all our residents. An investment today would help protect what makes Michigan a destination for outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.”
