State Representative Alicia St. Germaine has put forward a bill to officially designate Harrison Township as "Boat Town USA." The proposed legislation aims to emphasize Michigan's strong ties to boating culture and its waterfront lifestyle.
"Michigan has state symbols for so many things, so why not boats?" St. Germaine stated. She highlighted the significant economic impact of boating in Michigan, noting it contributes nearly $12 billion to the state's economy. As a state surrounded by the Great Lakes, water is integral to Michigan's identity and culture. According to St. Germaine, this designation would honor not only boaters but also others who enjoy life on the water, including fishermen, jet skiers, and sailors.
House Bill 4010 has successfully passed through the House and will now proceed to the Senate for further deliberation.
St. Germaine emphasized Lake St. Clair's role as a hub for recreational boating in Michigan and noted Harrison Township's central position within this community. "Even Google recognizes it as 'Boat Town USA,'" she remarked. By making this title official, Harrison Township would gain a unique distinction as the sole Boat Town USA globally—a move that celebrates local pride and life on the water.
