Macomb County Planning and Economic Development issued the following announcement on Oct. 16.
Green Macomb, an initiative of the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development (MCPED), has launched a new contest in an effort to find the most beautiful tree in Macomb County. The “Prettiest Tree Contest” asks the public to submit images of local trees between now and October 25 for a chance to win a ‘Made in Michigan’ prize package.
The fall season, combined with the importance of local tree canopy, inspired the creation of the contest.
"Trees are a valuable part of each community's infrastructure in that they have monetary and real benefits by reducing stormwater, providing fresh air, increasing real estate values and providing energy savings,” said Gerard Santoro, program director for parks and natural resources at MCPED. “And fall in Macomb County is the time of year that we are so much reminded of their beauty as they show their brilliant colors.”
Individuals interested in participating in the “Prettiest Tree Contest” can take a photo of a local tree and submit it here for consideration. All photos entered by the October 25 deadline will be added to a Facebook album, and between October 26 and November 1, the public will vote for their favorite. The photo with the most likes wins the prize package. An additional winner who can correctly identify the type of tree they submitted will be chosen at random.
Green Macomb will also award $150 towards the purchase of a tree for the community where the winning photo was taken. This action will support the initiative’s goal of increasing tree canopy in Macomb County to 40 percent.
“We encourage each community to assist in increasing their canopy cover,” Santoro said. “I’d also ask that they follow along or link to the Green Macomb Urban Forest Partnership website for timely updates at Green.Macombgov.Org.”
