Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s veto of a health care worker protection bill "greatly disappointed" Sen. Michael McDonald (R-Macomb Township), the senator said in a release on the Senate GOP website.

The legislation – Senate Bill 899 – was intended to legally protect health care workers during a state of emergency or disaster. Whitmer is on the side of trial lawyers, McDonald said in the release.

“By vetoing this measure, the governor is just making it harder for medical professionals to do their job,” the senator said in the release. “As this global pandemic continues, our doctors and nurses should be able to focus on providing the best care possible for their patients without worrying about possible lawsuits.”

SB 899 specified that health care professionals and facilities who provide services during a disaster or emergency declaration are not considered liable for the death or injury suffered by a person by reason of those services, the release said.
