Macomb County Michigan issued the following announcement on July 1.

Macomb County Veterans Services has partnered with Macomb Community Action and the Accounting Aid Society to offer free tax help for local veterans and low-income individuals and families through its IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Services will be available through July 15, 2020.

“The spread of COVID-19 compelled the Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service to extend the tax filing deadline into July,” said Laura Rios, chief veterans services officer, Macomb County Veterans Services. “We are just weeks away from that date, so now is the time to seek preparation and filing assistance. And if you need help, our program can provide it.”

The tax program is offered annually and typically serves about 1,500 people. Individuals qualify for help if they meet the following criteria:

  • Their income is less than $55,000
  • They do not have business income with employees
  • They do not have K-1 forms
  • They do not have corporate returns
No appointment is necessary. Qualified individuals can visit a VITA site for free assistance during the following dates and times:

  • Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Macomb County Family Resource Center (196 North Rose Street, Mount Clemens, in the back of the building)
