State Sen. Michael D. MacDonald (R-Macomb Township) issued a statement after voting to fund programs affected by Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s vetoes.
According to McDonald’s office, the legislation – Senate Bills 376 and 377 – would restore a total of $573.5 million of the governor’s vetoed funding and administrative funding transfers. Several critical state services will receive much-needed money, the release states.
“Many of the governor’s budget actions didn’t make any sense, and I was proud to support these measures as a first step in restoring her cuts and helping build a brighter future,” the senator said in the statement. “The governor’s funding cuts and transfers are already starting to impact Michigan children and families. Although this legislation would not fully restore the governor’s vetoes, it would support vital programs that Michigan residents use on a daily basis – from public safety to public health.”
The legislation aims to place money back into programs devoted to addressing Alzheimer’s disease, autism and opioid addiction. Other areas that will receive funding are law enforcement and education.
