State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township) has introduced a legislative proposal aimed at providing Michigan teachers with a $2,000 state income tax credit. The initiative is designed to help offset the personal expenses that educators often incur for classroom supplies.

“Many teachers spend hundreds of dollars from their own pockets to make sure their students have what they need to succeed,” said St. Germaine. “This bill is about giving back to the educators who give so much to our children and communities. It’s time we recognize their dedication with meaningful financial relief.”

If enacted, the proposed legislation would enable eligible K-12 teachers across Michigan to claim a refundable tax credit of up to $2,000 for qualified purchases such as classroom materials, instructional tools, or other resources used by students.

“Teachers should not have to choose between their personal finances and their students’ success,” said St. Germaine. “This bill shows that Michigan values its educators, and this is a step toward supporting and retaining quality educators in the state.”
