Utica Community Schools issued the following announcement on Mar. 1.
A trio of singers who combine operatic vocals with a light-hearted performance, known as The Sicilian Tenors, invited Eisenhower sophomore, Anna Hilliard, to open for their Detroit show in January.
Performing since she was 8 years old, Hilliard’s vocal performance with The Sicilian Tenors was the first time she was on stage in over two years due to the pandemic.
“This performance was incredible for me,” Hilliard said. “I hadn’t been able to sing in front of live audiences for a while so to be able to get back to doing what I love felt so amazing.”
When she began singing at the age of 8, she barely knew one word of Italian. Although Hilliard does not claim to be fluent in the language, she has learned to sing in Italian with the pronunciation help from her Italian family.
“It is very fun and interesting being able to sing in a different language,” said Hilliard. “I may say it is a challenge but putting in that hard work makes it even more amazing for me. It adds much more pressure, and it takes a lot more preparation, but I love being able to do it and I learn so many new things from it.”
Hilliard is in her first year at Eisenhower High School where she is in the Women’s Chorus and says she has already learned so much more about music.
“The concerts and events we have been performing at have been so great and they continue to teach me more and more about my love for music,” Hilliard said.
“UCS has had a huge impact on my singing.”
