City of Sterling Height issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.
Beginning March 1, the city of Sterling Heights is hosting a month-long series of events at the public library in celebration of March is Reading Month, a time meant to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day.
“Reading has so many benefits, regardless of your age,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. “It can help improve brain function, memory and vocabulary, and it can even help you reduce stress. Simply put, it’s good for everyone.”
Events and activities scheduled at the public library include:
- March 1, 10:30 a.m. (ages 2-5) – Reading Month Kick-Off
In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, we are starting with a storytime that features special guests from the fire and police departments. Kids will get a glimpse into these city services in the stories they read.
- March 19, 2 p.m. (ages 8-12) – Author Reading and Q&A
Elizabeth C. Bunce, the author of the popular Myrtle Hardcastle Mystery Series, will be joining us remotely for a reading from the series. Get a glimpse into the exciting process of creating Myrtle’s world and then look behind the curtain during the Q&A portion. This even is delivered via Zoom.
- March 26, 2 p.m. (all ages) – Meet the Pets with Local Authors and Illustrator
- Meet the creators of Meet the Pets: Presidential Animals from A to Z. Local authors Cathy Collison and Janis Campbell with illustrator Wendy Popko present their book about the animals that have graced the White House. Organized in alphabetical order, this book features alligator to zebra and everything in between. You will get to hear this charming book read by the creators and a first-hand account of how the book was made.
- March 29, 6 p.m. (all ages) – Open Mic and Authors Event
- The local writing community invites people of all ages to listen to our writers and poets sharing their creative works! No registration is required to listen.
