State Sen. Michael MacDonald (R-Macomb Twp.) recently called attention to federal benefits that are now available for the self-employed and independent contractors.
In a post to his official Facebook page, MacDonald reminded Michigan residents that unemployment benefits became available April 13 to those without an employer.
According to the website for the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (MDLEO), self-employed individuals now eligible for unemployment benefits include gig workers and those who receive a form a 1099 for tax purposes.
The expansion of benefits comes from the recently passed COVID-19 CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act.
The MDLEO website stated that the state's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) will accept backdated applications that reflect the entire period of unemployment due to the COVID-19 crisis. This is an expansion past the regular 28-day limit.
However, the additional $600 federal payment made possible through the COVID-19 CARES Act will only be backdated to April 4.
