The City of Sterling Heights is pleased to announce its recent recognition for outstanding performance in the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) conducted a comprehensive monitoring visit from June 12 to June 15, 2023, marking the first time since 2011 that the City underwent such an evaluation.

HUD's monitoring program selects communities for assessment on an annual basis, with Sterling Heights being chosen this year due to the significant amount of time that had elapsed since the previous monitoring, regardless of the absence of complaints or concerns. The results of the monitoring report have demonstrated the City's unwavering commitment to effective program management and meaningful community engagement.

The City of Sterling Heights received a highly commendable evaluation from HUD, with particular recognition given to the following areas:

Staff Capacity and Program Management:

The report highlighted the city of Sterling Heights' impressive ability to manage its CDBG funding efficiently, while also remaining compliant with all relevant federal regulations. Notably, the City achieved this commendable outcome with a lean staff, outperforming several comparable communities in the state.

Selection of Meaningful and Innovative CDBG & CDBG-CV Activities:

During the monitoring visit, the Senior Center in Sterling Heights was singled out for praise as a high-quality facility designed to serve the needs of senior residents for years to come. The facility’s thoughtful and innovative design was celebrated as a shining example of the City's commitment to improving the lives of its residents.

Mark Sorbo, HUD Program Manager, shared his satisfaction with the report's findings, noting that Sterling Heights has been consistently focused on achieving the highest standards in its CDBG program.

HUD's assessment also underscored the City’s commitment to promoting low and moderate-income housing. The report attested to the City's meticulous planning and adherence to federal guidelines in their efforts to support single-family owner-occupied residential properties.

"We are incredibly proud of the results and the commendations received from HUD," said Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool. "The success of this visit is a testament to the dedication and hard work of Teresa Jarzab and Sydnie Allor, who administer the CDBG program with exceptional diligence and excellence. The recognition of their capabilities and commitment to meaningful and innovative programs further motivates us to continue our pursuit of excellence in serving our community."
