Macomb County’s Goldenberry Adult Dementia Day Center to Become First Program in the Country With Montessori Inspired Lifestyle Certification

Award

Macomb County issued the following announcement on Aug. 31.

The Macomb County Office of Senior Services has announced that its Goldenberry Adult Day Center will soon be trained and credentialed as a Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® (MIL) Program. It will be the first adult dementia day center in the United States to receive this certification and it will showcase its new features during an open house on Sept. 8.

“Our goal is to enhance quality of life for older adults impacted by dementia, including Alzheimer’s,” said Nicole Urban, program manager, Macomb County Office of Senior Services. “With the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle Program, we will expand those services and be able to treat each participant with an individualized approach.”

Montessori Inspired Lifestyle is a person-centered approach to living that involves understanding a person’s capabilities and interests and developing activities and plans of care that match the individual with their environment. This approach leads to greater independence and maintenance of remaining abilities among people with cognitive and physical disabilities. It also is a general approach to living that emphasizes the key values of respect, dignity and equality.  MIL training is rooted in rehabilitative techniques and educational approaches originated by Dr. Maria Montessori. It has been developed through decades of gerontological and neuro-psychological research by Dr. Cameron Camp and his team.

“I am incredibly proud of our team at Goldenberry and the Office of Senior Services for their work towards the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle credential,” said Sheila Coté, director, Macomb County Office of Senior Services. “Their dedication to the well-being of our participants and their families is inspiring, and their pursuit of new programming and treatment is both innovative and forward-thinking.”

Goldenberry offers respite care for caregivers who are in need of assistance while caring for their loved ones. The program includes meals, snacks, activities, exercise, transportation, health monitoring, medication management, personal care, socialization and caregiver support. It has certified nursing assistants, registered nurse accessibility and a social worker with a one to three ratio of staff to participants. Staff provide continuous supervision and practice mandated safety protocols.

Individuals interested in learning more about Goldenberry and its MIL certification can attend a public open house on Wednesday, Sept. 8 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 21885 Dunham Road, Entrance Door B, in Clinton Township. A presentation on the MIL program will begin at 6 p.m. and light refreshments will be provided.

Funding assistance for Goldenberry services is available through Veterans Administration and the Area Agency on Aging 1-B. The program also offers a private pay rate which is less than the cost of home health care. For additional information, call 586 469-5580.
