City of Center Line issued the following announcement on Aug. 20
Traffic control is a problem in every community and Center Line is no exception to the rule. In the last few years, we have had an influx of complaints about traffic problems in our city. Part of our traffic problem comes from road construction where people are trying to find alternate routes to and from work. The second part of our problem we created ourselves by having too many stop signs. Research shows that stop signs should be used to determine the “right-of-way” and are ineffective in slowing down drivers. In-fact if there are too many stop signs drivers will start to ignore those signs that they feel are unnecessary and/or speed up faster than they were going, in an effort to “make up time” that they lost stopping for the sign. The Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices clearly states, “Stop signs shall not be used for speed control”.
