Macomb County Planning & Economic Development issued the following announcement on July 20.

This just in! Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works is offering a FREE pre-apprenticeship program for residents age 18-24 of Macomb or St. Clair counties. This program covers all expenses for a 16 week program including tuition, books, a laptop and a weekly stipend of $90. Classes begin August 23 and spots are limited.

The MAP+ Pre-apprenticeship program is a one semester Industrial-Readiness certificate program designed to introduce students to careers in skilled trades and manufacturing.  The pre-apprenticeship consists of 4 classes:  Shop Math, Drafting/Blueprint Reading, Industrial Safety, and Trade Related Prep.  Students who complete all four classes with a GPA of 2.0 or better will earn the pre-apprenticeship certificate as well as 9 credits from Macomb Community College.

We have found that MAP+ graduates have a clearer understanding of their aptitudes and interests having completed the pre-apprenticeship, and Young Professionals career counselors work closely with graduates to identify a career pathway where those can be best applied.

During Fall 2021 semester, MAP+ will be a virtual program making it possible for those without transportation to participate.  Additionally, there are no scheduled class dates/times where students are required to be online.  Rather, students are given study modules that must be completed by Saturday evening each week.  For young adults who are working, there is maximum flexibility in being able to attend post-secondary training around employment.
