Michigan GOP Chair Laura Cox attempted to smear Ron Weiser in an email to delegates just days before they're set to vote on the new Republican Party chair.

Cox also slammed Macomb County resident Stanley Grot, saying he was on the receiving end of a payment that allegedly convinced him to drop his bid for the Secretary of State spot in the 2018 election cycle.

Longtime Republican Party activist Glenn Clark said the situation was disturbing.

"I've known Ron Weiser for a long time," Clark said. "He is a man of integrity who has supported grassroots Republican efforts in Michigan for many years. Now is the time to plan our defeat of the Democrats and their dangerous agenda by rejecting an unbelievable and wildly false attack against Ambassador Weiser and congressional district chairman Grot at the 11th hour.”

Cox's email alleged Weiser, when he was state party chair in 2018, made a “secret deal” to pay Grot to get out of the race.

This matter had previously been examined by authorities, including former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Young and no wrongdoing was found.

Grot was appointed by Cox to chair the state party’s budget committee.

“I find it highly ironic that Laura Cox put me in charge of the party finances and appointed me chairman of the Republican Party budget committee if she truly thought I shouldn’t have been hired," Grot said in a statement. "Laura Cox is desperate to hold on to her job and full of sour grapes. Shame on her. Shame."

The vote is set to take place on Saturday.
