Sen. Michael MacDonald (R-Macomb Township) voted in favor of submitting a fleet of COVID-19-related bills to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer after the Michigan Supreme Court recently struck down her executive orders.

“We must work together to protect the health and safety of all Michigan residents," MacDonald said, according to MiSenateGOP. "It is what the people expect and how our system of government is supposed to work. These commonsense reforms will support workers who lost their jobs due to COVID-19, keep seniors in nursing homes safe from the virus, protect health care providers from lawsuits, and allow local government boards to meet virtually. I will keep putting Macomb families first by going to work to protect them and our state, and I hope these measures are the beginning of a new, positive partnership with the governor on dealing with the coronavirus.”

Senate Bills 886 and 911 extend unemployment benefits for up to 26 weeks to those who are unemployed due to the pandemic. SB 1108 allows local government meetings to continue in a virtual format and still provide a way for members of the public to participate. SB 1094 aims to reduce the spread of coronavirus in nursing homes by, among other things, implementing Care and Recovery Centers within nursing homes to isolate and treat patients who have been infected.

House Bill 6159 provides liability protections to health care workers. HB 6192 extends the expiration deadlines for Michigan driver's licenses and vehicle registration until December 31, 2020.

“Health care providers should be able to focus their entire efforts on the best possible care for their patients,” MacDonald told MiSenateGOP. “We passed similar legislation I sponsored this summer to protect our frontline health care workers, but the governor vetoed it — along with vetoing bills safeguarding our nursing homes and helping unemployed workers. This time I hope the governor will stand up for the Michigan people and sign these important measures.”
