Following the Michigan State Supreme Court's ruling that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's executive orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic were unconstitutional and an overreach in power, Sen. Michael MacDonald (R-Macomb Township) has announced his support for legislation providing relief measures for Michigan residents, according to MiSenateGOP.
These measures are designed to help local governments, as well as those who are unemployed or senior citizens, who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
MacDonald urged a bipartisan response that doesn't overreach or oppress constituents. He told MiSenateGOP, “After the court reinforced our constitutional system of shared governance, we owe it to all Michigan families to work together to protect them during this pandemic."

The legislation for which MacDonald has declared his support would expand unemployment benefits and make sure that local governments have the resources that they need to govern digitally and hold meetings online to address the ongoing coronavirus situation. This legislation is pending a vote in the state government.
