MACOMB COMMUNITY ACTION: Volunteers Needed For Macomb County Meals on Wheels Program

4

Macomb Community Action issued the following announcement on Sept. 17.

The Macomb County Office of Senior Services Meals on Wheels program has announced that it will transition back to the use of volunteers for delivering meals to local homebound seniors. It is therefore putting out a call for help to the community.

“Volunteers are an essential part of our program,” said Sheila Coté, director of the Macomb County Office of Senior Services. “They not only deliver meals, they perform welfare checks and ensure our senior population receives the support they need and deserve."

Volunteer service for Meals on Wheels in Macomb County was halted in March following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Macomb County employees stepped in to fill the void.

“Switching our mode of delivery was a cautionary measure to reduce potential risk of exposure to both volunteers and seniors,” said Coté. “The last six months were a challenge, but I am proud to say that we did not miss any meal deliveries. Now we are in a position to re-engage volunteers in our delivery process.”

The Office of Senior Services is specifically looking for volunteers willing to deliver meals in the northern part of Macomb County. Individuals interested in a role with the program can fill out an application at https://mca.macombgov.org/MCA-Seniors-MOW-Volunteer.

As part of their onboarding, volunteers will receive training on new procedures that will ensure their safety, and the safety of the Meals on Wheels recipients. This includes the adherence to the use of face masks and other essential personal protective equipment. For more information, contact the Office of Senior Services at (586)469-5228 or email mcaseniors@macombgov.org.
