When every second feels like an hour and 5:00 minutes feels like an eternity. When the sound you are so desperately wanting to hear is the sirens pulling up. In these helpless moments for so many callers, our 911 Dispatchers are everything.
On 7-10-22, this man was having dinner as he did every other night. Suddenly he began to choke on a piece of beef and his family had to make the call that nobody wants to make. “9-1-1 What is your emergency?” The caller explained that the man was choking, and they needed an ambulance.
The dispatcher immediately typed the information into his computer, which was fed to additional dispatchers. While the 9-1-1 call taker kept the woman on the line, the other dispatchers were dispatching an ambulance, the fire department, and deputies. We want our citizens to know that incidents are handled by a team of dispatchers and not just the one you may be talking to when making that traumatic call. While every second feels like eternity, we have multiple people working behind the scenes to get the help needed to your location as quickly as possible.
While emergency services were driving to the man’s home, the dispatcher walked the woman through the Heimlich maneuver and then CPR. These helpful words and the brave actions of the man’s family were what dislodged the piece of beef from the man’s throat allowing him to breathe again…. all before the ambulance, fire department, or deputies arrived on scene.
