Utica Community Schools issued the following announcement on Jan. 20.

What began nearly 9 years ago at Stevenson High School as a (then) high school relationship between Jolie Huynh, now a Duncan Elementary Kindergarten teacher, and her then boyfriend, Tim Donoher, has taken the next step.

“While I was in a ‘meeting’ with Principal Coil and my students were out for recess, I was told one of my students needed me outside,” Huynh said. “So, I rushed to see what was going on.”

“Little did I know that when I walked outside, my students would all be holding up signs that said, ‘marry him, Miss Huynh!’”

With the help of Ms. Huynh’s Kindergarten students, Duncan Elementary principal, Sharon Coil, and Huynh’s co-workers, Allison Aguilar and Carmie Cerrone, Donoher’s two months of planning paid off – Huynh said yes!

Along with the signs, each of Huynh’s students held a rose that they gave to her once she said “yes.”

“Their reactions when I was gathering the roses from them were so sweet,” Huynh said. “Hearing them tell me ‘I love you’ during this will be a moment I will forever cherish.”

“I thought it would be special to propose to her in the district where everything first started,” said Donoher. “We were both UCS students growing up and started dating at Stevenson High School.”

According to Huynh, Donoher planned the perfect proposal for her.

“My fiancée was able to combine the two things that mean the world to me – him and my students,” said Huynh.

Huynh’s students were so excited to be involved with the proposal and later that night, went home telling their parents, “Ms. Huynh got married and had a wedding at school today!”

Contrary to what many of Huynh’s Kindergartners reported when they went home, no official marriage took place that day at Duncan Elementary. However, Huynh and Donoher have begun planning their wedding to be held next summer.
