State Representative Doug Wozniak concluded his series of responses to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address on Mar. 10 by focusing on the need for increased oversight and accountability within Michigan’s state government.

Wozniak said that while the governor’s speech covered several policy priorities, it did not address reforms aimed at improving transparency or strengthening oversight of taxpayer-funded programs. He emphasized that one of the Legislature’s most important responsibilities is to ensure state departments operate transparently and remain accountable to Michigan residents.

“The biggest problems in state government rarely happen in public view,” said Wozniak (R-Shelby Township). “They happen inside large bureaucracies where decisions are made without enough scrutiny or accountability.”

He referenced reforms approved by House Republicans that have given the House Oversight Committee greater authority to investigate state departments and review how taxpayer-funded programs are managed. These changes allow lawmakers to more aggressively examine agencies, request records and testimony, and ensure programs are operating responsibly.

“Government departments answer to the people, and the Legislature has a duty to make sure that happens,” Wozniak said. “Strengthening oversight ensures we can investigate problems, ask tough questions, and hold state agencies accountable when something isn’t working.”

Wozniak concluded by saying that improving oversight is essential for restoring trust in government operations. “When government grows too large and too insulated from public scrutiny, accountability suffers,” he said. “Stronger oversight helps ensure Michigan residents have confidence that their government is operating openly and responsibly.”
