State Representative Doug Wozniak has responded to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s recent State of the State address, focusing on issues related to job creation and economic growth in Michigan.

Governor Whitmer emphasized the need for Michigan to remain competitive with neighboring states such as Ohio and Indiana, highlighting the importance of making it easier for businesses to grow and create jobs. Wozniak expressed agreement with this point, stating, “I agree with the governor, and I’m glad she seems to have recognized that her long-standing policy of corporate handouts isn’t the solution to economic growth and job creation. It took long enough, but better late than never.”

Wozniak noted that he welcomed what he sees as a shift in the governor’s approach toward policies advocated by House Republicans. He referenced ongoing efforts through the Red Tape Reduction Initiative, which aims to cut regulatory barriers for businesses in Michigan. According to Wozniak, these initiatives are intended to foster business expansion, increase hiring opportunities, lower prices, and boost wages for workers across the state.

He also highlighted concerns about how taxpayer funds are used for economic development programs. “Taxpayers deserve accountability for every dollar spent on economic development,” Wozniak said. “Expensive corporate handouts haven’t always delivered the results people were promised, and Michigan families deserve better value for their tax dollars.”

Wozniak reiterated his support for small businesses rather than large corporations when it comes to state economic policy. He stated: “Small businesses power our local economies. By continuing to cut red tape and remove unnecessary barriers, we can create an environment where Michigan businesses grow, reinvest in their communities, and create good-paying jobs.”

The statements come as part of a series outlining Rep. Wozniak’s responses to key issues raised during Governor Whitmer’s 2026 address.
