City of Sterling Heights issued the following announcement on Feb. 2.
The city of Sterling Heights, in collaboration with members of the City’s African American Coalition, is hosting a month-long series of events in celebration of Black History Month.
The events are aimed at increasing local recognition of and engagement in Black History Month. Events and activities scheduled include:
- Feb. 12, 2 p.m. at Sterling Heights Public Library (preschool and up) – A World of Music & Stories with Ms. Audrey – music from around the world, including steel drums, kalimba, cuica & berimbau along with storytelling specifically curated for Black History Month.
- Feb. 17, 7 p.m. at Sterling Heights Public Library – In Our Own Voice: African American Art Webinar – creative contributions of African Americans from the 19th century through present day. Offered through the DIA’s Behind the Seen series.
- Feb. 19, 6 p.m. at Royalty House Banquet Facility – Macomb Celebration of Black Excellence Awards Gala – the City’s African American Coalition is sponsoring this annual event where community leaders experience a cultural immersion and celebrate six honorees.
- Feb. 23, 6 p.m. at Sterling Heights Public Library – Screening of Double Victory: The Tuskegee Airmen at War – screening of the documentary that tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American pilots in the United States military, who served during World War II. Dr. Brian Smith, president of the National Museum of Tuskegee Airmen, will attend the screening and share his expertise.
- All Month Long at Sterling Heights Public Library – Library book clubs will feature books from Black authors – Senior Book Club will be reading It’s Not All Downhill Form Here by Terry McMillan on Feb. 2 and Books on Tap will be reading Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie. Library storytimes and more.
- The Halo on M-59’s Golden Corridor will be lit with a red/yellow/green chase the weekend of Feb. 5 and 6 in honor of Black History Month.
“Black History Month is a time for recognizing and celebrating the many achievements and contributions African Americans have made to the formation of our country,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. “We wanted to recognize the national month-long celebration, but we also wanted to underscore its importance locally by adopting a resolution recognizing February 2022 as Black History Month in Sterling Heights and working to host these educational and inspirational events for all our residents.”
